Sophisticated charm

Located approximately 110 miles from New York City and 50 miles from Albany, the charming downtown Rhinebeck area has been registered in National Historic Places since 1979 for its collection of preserved buildings and architectural gems.

The Village of Rhinebeck is nestled east of the Hudson River with views of the majestic Catskill Mountains.  Take a stroll down the tree lined streets dotted with historic homes in the Village to find specialty independent boutiques and shops, day and stay spas, fitness and wellness, wine shops with tastings, top rated restaurants and the Sunday farmer’s market

Get Your Zen On! Things to do in Rhinebeck

Rhinebeck is a cultural magnet offering performing arts, galleries, independent film, historic homes and architecture.  Enjoy festivals and special events throughout the year at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds.  Outside of the upstate Village bustle, you’ll find Catskill Mountain and Hudson River views, the Omega Institute focused on holistic studies and personal growth, hiking and biking trails, orchards, swimming lakes, farm stands, sleigh riding hills offering majestic Hudson Valley views, Christmas tree farms and horses enjoying their paddocks.  The Old Rhinebeck Aerodome offers a museum spread across four buildings and summer weekends host pilot staged dog fights and aviation skills demonstrations in biplanes and WWI fighters.

An abundance of offerings unfold on a stroll through the Village of Rhinebeck.  This is a condensed list of favs and by no means comprehensive.

For a bite, I’m a creature of habit with much more to explore yet in Rhinebeck.  Aba’s FalafalCinnamon IndianAroi Thai, and Terrapin are regular stops.  Market Street Cafe is one, among many, on my “to do” radar.  Rarely a week without a stop into Village Pizzaand refill of  “Al Attitude.”  For a variety of breads, it’s tough to beat Bread Alone.  My child has repeatedly proven we cannot make it a week without at least something from Buns and Burgers.  The sweet spot and a yummy cup of Chai go to Samuels.  There are so many more worthy restaurants.  This is truly just a sampling of options.

Al at Village Pizza is all about personality and great pizza.  He was quite the hit across social media platforms with this post.  Check it out.

Rhinebeck is worthy of exploration!  Taking a five-minute shopping tour of Rhinebeck with me. Click here!

With only five miles between the center of the Village of Rhinebeck and the center of the Village of Red Hook, prepare to release Rhinebeck’s upstate bustle for its low-key historic sister, Red Hook.  Along the way, grab a bucket at Brittany Hollow Farm Flowers and fill up with an abundant choice of pick your own flowers.   Don’t miss ice cream at local favorite Holy Cow on the approach into the Village.

The Town of Red Hook encompasses the town along with two villages:  the Village of Red Hook and the Village of Tivoli.  The walking villages offer myriad specialty shops, eateries and lots of locally made gems.  Check out the video below for a shopping tour of Red Hook!

Education in Red Hook, New York

Bard College, an internally recognized liberal arts college, is right next door in Annandale-on-Hudson. The Bard College campus offers an indoor pool available during certain hours to the public and is a beautiful campus for a stroll with community and sculpture gardens.  Red Hook schools also a swim team slated to commence utilizing  the Bard pool.  Watch the Superintendent of Red Hook Central School District interview below for more.

Red Hook Central School District  The Red Hook Central School District is larger than its sister town, Rhinebeck, by approximately double.  The total student population as of August, 2024 is 1,576.  The District houses four educational buildings.  The elementary is divided between two buildings:  PreK-2 and 3-5 with one middle school and one high school.

What to Do in Red Hook

Walking trails abound with a local fav, Poet’s Walk.  This beautiful walk on a well-maintained path offers wildlife sightings, natural flowerings and beautiful views of the Hudson River.  Blythewood Mansion on Bard campus offers one of my favorite spots to picnic and is never crowded (don’t let the word out!)  The expansive rolling lawns with gardens and beautiful Hudson River views are tough to beat.

The Village of Red Hook Chamber has a full schedule of events throughout the year, including the yummy chocolate festival.   The Red Hook Community Center has ongoing events, volunteer efforts and fundraisers.  Rose Hill Farms offers a more natural setting for apple and other produce picking and winter sleigh riding complete with hot chocolate in the winter.   Montgomery Place Orchards is beautiful and also offers a large variety of produce picking.  Along with pick your own produce and weekend breakfast, Greig Farm has a well-stocked store with animals generally lingering around for a casual pet.  Just down the street from Greig’s Farm is Ozone with a variety of goods, services and workshops all geared to a sustainable existence. If you’re into mushrooms that straddle art form, check out Tivoli Mushrooms.

The Tivoli Sailing Company offers kids and adult programs along with charters on the Hudson River.  Tivoli is a smaller Village than Red Hook and has interesting shops, fresh foods and produce. Not to miss is YogaMat for aerial yoga with a particular offering that gets my Zen going:  floating sound meditation.

Colonial History to Thriving Arts

Founded in 1652, Kingston maintains that historic old world colonial charm while welcoming the new influences of a vibrant art scene. Kingston is made up of the distinct neighborhoods the Uptown Stockade, the Midtown, and the Downtown Waterfront. The city’s population is approximately 23,887.

What to Do

The three distinct areas of Kingston offer robust options to suit all tastes.  Strolling through uptown Kingston reveals eclectic salons, trendy eateries and pubs, specialty boutiques, historic sites and great vibe coffee shops.  On Saturdays, enjoy the Farmers Market.  There is an overall undertone of creative arts throughout Kingston, but in midtown the arts, performance and music scene bursts with life.  The Ulster Performing Arts Center underwent $5.4M in renovations in 2017.  The first Saturday each month hosts gallery exhibits in local businesses throughout the area.  The riverfront in Kingston, known as Rondout, offers opportunity to dock your boat and take a stroll for lunch.  The Maritime and Trolley museums are both located in the Rondout area with trolley rides, specialty boutiques, spa, fine and casual dining options.  Festivals abound throughout Kingston.  Hutton Brickyards hosts special events and arts and crafts fairs throughout the year.  The Wyltwyck Golf Club offers a round within beauty with a fully renovated pub/restaurant.  Kingston Point Park and Beach offer an oasis from the urban city bustle.  The Kingston Point Rail Trail offers a full day of beauty on beautifully maintained trails.

IT’S ROAD TRIP TIME! KINGSTON, NY IS WHERE IT’S AT!

If you are looking for hip shops and delicious spots – Kingston is your place!  The arts district, uptown boutiques and the Rondout water front combine with renovation and revitalization throughout.  Ex-Brooklynites are making it far hipper than Williamsburg!

Poughkeepsie

Poughkeepsie is made up of the city and the town which surrounds it. With close proximity to the Poughkeepsie Metro-North station accessibility to a NYC and other Hudson river communities is a breeze.

Poughkeepsie is made up of the city and the town which surrounds it. With close proximity to the Poughkeepsie Metro-North station accessibility to a NYC and other Hudson river communities is a breeze. The city has about 30,515 residents and the town has approximately 43,341 residents.

The City of Poughkeepsie has been undergoing a transformation in recent years.  Varied housing options from modest to luxury, culinary assortments of fine and casual dining,  indoor and outdoor entertainment and commercial offerings continue to grow in the City.  Additionally, the recent addition of the Vassar Hospital extension should introduce approximately 200 new medical staff to the area over the next three years.

Things to do

Poughkeepsie Galleria which boasts all the major brand name retailers also includes a Target, Best Buy and a 16 screen Regal Cinema. Walkway on the Hudson provides beautiful scenic views of the Hudson and beyond on this beautifully restored bridge for trains transformed into a stunning elevated hiking trail and park.

Historic buildings line both the city and town of Poughkeepsie including the Bardavon 1869 Opera House  and Locust Grove.

Both the Chance and Mid-Hudson Civic Center have regularly scheduled concerts and events drawing people from all around the Hudson Valley.

Schools

The Poughkeepsie City School District is the public K-12 school system, serving approximately 5,000 students. While the town of Poughkeepsie is divided amongst many bordering school districts it is served by Arlington‘s, Spackenkill‘s, and parts of Wappinger‘s and Hyde Park‘s districts.

Both Vassar College and Marist College have beautiful historic campuses in the town.

Housing Options

Poughkeepsie offers a diverse range of housing options from modest to luxury in both rental and resale.  Within the City of Poughkeepsie, there are neighborhoods reminiscent of towns like Larchmont, New York in Westchester County with their street lamp lined sidewalks and historic homes.

As one example, see the video below for what had been the highest sale in the City of Poughkeepsie for over 15 years as of December 2020.  The $700,000 sale would cost a tad more in Larchmont!   Resales have increased in Poughkeepsie since 2020 with high end homes now reaching the million dollar range.  See video at top for more on that.  Below take a tour of the beautiful 1930’s manor home referenced above located at 7 St. John’s Parkway.

While in the middle of the city with easy access to fine dining and entertainment, the property and home translate to exhale with birds singing, privacy within their beautifully landscaped property and inground pool.
